Beth Moffitt – Antique Lover and Piano Student

When Beth Moffitt moved to Lakeview Village with her husband Mike, she knew it was now or never! If she was going to ask Mike to move the antique Stuyvesant upright piano yet again, then it was time Beth learned how to play it. For years, it just sat on a wall looking beautiful as a statement antique piece in her home.

“I’d say Mike has moved it eight to ten times over the years,” said Beth. “So, when we decided to move from Illinois back to Kansas, it was a big decision whether or not we would move it yet again. It’s big and heavy and not easy to move, so, if we were going to move it, it had to be for a reason.”

Beth promised herself it was time to recreate her childhood memories in Kansas, when her grandma Dalton would sit at the piano every Christmas season, playing carols for everyone to sing. Beth dreamed of continuing the holiday legacy with her son and daughter-in-law. All she needed was a piano teacher willing to take on an older student.

Not long after moving to their new home at Lakeview, Beth met Lakeview Village resident Linda Arnett who’s been teaching youngsters how to play piano for decades. Linda agreed to take Beth in as a new student and teaches her once a week at Meyer Music in Overland Park. Until then, Beth hadn’t been playing since she was a little girl.

“I’m now at a level that’s just above the earliest beginner,” Beth admits. “I try to practice almost every day which even Linda was surprised by, but since I’m paying her for lessons I should take this seriously, right?”

Beth is still fairly self-conscious about playing the piano in front of others, including her husband Mike who she usually sends downstairs to the basement while she plucks out a new song. Though soon enough there will be more than just Linda and Mike who will hear Beth’s progress.

“Linda talked me into doing a recital at Heritage Center, so we’ll see how that goes,” giggles Beth.

The real test will come Christmas time when the family gathers for the holidays and Beth presents them all with some nostalgic classics of the season.
